Kyushu gets a lot cheaper from October 1.
Japan’s Tourism Agency is launching the Kyushu Recovery Support Discount (九州ふっこう応援割), taking up to 50% off stays and travel packages in all seven Kyushu prefectures, and up to 60% in Kumamoto and Kagoshima.

It follows this year’s Kumamoto earthquake, which led to a wave of hotel cancellations across the region.
The key point for overseas travellers: Oita, home of Yufuin and Beppu, states in its FAQ that foreign visitors to Japan are eligible.

The discount

From the Japan Tourism Agency (in Japanese):

Item Details
Where Fukuoka, Saga, Nagasaki, Kumamoto, Oita, Miyazaki, Kagoshima
What Stays and travel packages of one night or more
From Stays from October 1, 2026 (end dates vary by prefecture)
Discount 50%, or 60% in Kumamoto and Kagoshima
Cap per person per trip Stay only, or one night with transport: ¥20,000
Two nights or more with transport: ¥30,000
  Multi-prefecture trips: ¥35,000

Each prefecture sets its own booking dates, participating hotels and how the discount is applied, so check the campaign site for where you are going.

The cap is per trip, not per night.
Oita’s FAQ gives the example of one person staying two nights at ¥40,000 a night: the discount is still ¥20,000 (stay-only booking).

Yufuin and Beppu: Oita

From Oita Prefecture and the campaign FAQ:

Booking channel Sales start Stays covered
Rakuten Travel, Jalan, Yahoo! Travel, Ikyu September 25, noon (already open) October 1 – December 25
Oita travel agencies October 9 October 9 – December 25

The FAQ points worth knowing:

  • Foreign visitors are eligible (FAQ 13).
  • Children count towards the number of guests.
  • Business trips are excluded, and so are day trips.
  • Packages that include a stay outside Kyushu are not eligible.
  • The hot spring bathing tax counts towards the discounted amount.
  • Cancel the booking and the discount goes too.
  • There are no local coupons, just the price discount.
  • You must show ID and sign a form at the hotel, or the discount does not apply.

Yufuin ryokan are not cheap, so many stays will hit the ¥20,000 cap.
If you are looking at places like Ikkoten or Oyado Yufunoshou, check the campaign site’s hotel list to see if they are taking part.

Fukuoka

From the Fukuoka campaign site:

Item Details
Stays covered October 1 – December 15 (check out by December 16)
Sales September 24 – December 15
Note Bookings made before sales opened on September 24 are not eligible
Early end Ends early if the budget runs out

Fukuoka ends ten days earlier than Oita, so check your dates if you are passing through in late December.

For hotels that take direct bookings, book on their website or by phone and say you want to use the discount.
The lead guest’s ID is checked and a form filled in at check-in.

Booking from abroad

The booking sites Oita lists are Japanese sites: Rakuten Travel, Jalan, Yahoo! Travel and Ikyu.
International sites such as Agoda and Booking.com are not on Oita’s list.

Even on those Japanese sites, whether the discount works on their English or overseas versions can differ.
Make sure the discount actually shows at checkout before paying. Oita’s FAQ itself says the method varies by site.

For other prefectures, check each one’s FAQ on foreign visitors.
Korean trade paper Travel Times reports that the national guidelines prohibit unjustly excluding particular travellers, which in principle includes visitors from abroad.
